City Sonic: Justin Rutledge at The Cameron House

August 7, 2009

Director: Rob Pilichowski, 2009
Singer/songwriter Justin Rutledge and Blue Rodeo bassist Bazil Donovan first met at the Cameron House, a bar/hotel/art gallery/theatre and live music venue on Queen Street West famous for its colourful murals outside and colourful characters inside. It’s where Rutledge once held a weekly residency every Monday, trying out new material and building his audience until it was spilling out the door. He never knew just who would come walking in to the club. One night it was Donovan, who had played the Cameron’s back room early in Blue Rodeo’s career, coming to see “the new Ron Sexsmith.” Now close friends and bandmates, they grab a seat at the bar and reflect on unexpected relationships forged at the Cameron House and how the artist-friendly space helped launch their careers. A meditative film about creativity and community, featuring live performance of a brand new Justin Rutledge song, “Saturday Night at the Cameron.”
