Production Diary: Barenaked Ladies at Ultrasound Showbar

Tyler switched up his drum kit for a couple bongos to save room on the crowded street .

The Barenaked Ladies are one of the most recognizable acts we approached for City Sonic, and so when director Peter Lynch suggested the whole band busk on Queen Street West for his film about drummer Tyler Stewart we were surprised and delighted that they agreed. It would be the first time BNL performed as a foursome too. As more and more passers-by stopped to watch and started to spill off the sidewalk into traffic we kept our eyes on the nearby cops, worried our little permit-free performance would come to an abrupt halt. No trouble came to pass as we found out: everybody loves Tyler, even the authorities.

Description: Barenaked Ladies got their start on MuchMusic’s “Speaker’s Corner” booth and the UltraSound Showbar down the street. Today, those spots are both gone. Drummer Tyler Stewart reminisces about the grassroots community that once dominated this stretch of Queen Street West.
