Congrats to City Sonic artists Sebastien Grainger and D-sisive for making the Top 5 short list for this year’s Echo Prize. The songwriting award is presented by SOCAN and comes with $5,000. The winner is determined by public vote so go on over to the virtual polling booth where you can listen to Sebastien’s “Love Can Be so Mean” or D-sisive’s “Nobody with A Notepad” and cast a vote for your favourite. (There are other fine nominees too, but we’re unabashedly biased.) You can vote once a day until the contest closes September 29.

Get Outside: Blackout party on Ossington tonight!
August 14, 2009Where were you August 14, 2003? If you’re local, odds are I know where you were — in the dark. The Great Northeast Blackout hit Toronto hard, leaving us without TV and A/C and forcing us onto our porches and into the streets to BBQ, star-gaze, take photos or search for mythic free ice cream giveaways. Personally, I reveled in the black and quiet and wish we could mark the occasion each year by turning off all our power voluntarily and enjoying the magic of the night. This year, I’m in luck!
Tonight, 28 businesses on Ossington between Queen and Dundas streets are throwing a Blackout Party! No lights, no mics — just unplugged live music, food and random acts of art will happen when darkness descends (or 8pm to 2am). Details on specific performances are vague but we know City Sonic artist Sebastien Grainger will be there. (Oh, have we not told you yet that we’ve made a film with Sebastien? Well now we have!) Some info is on this Facebook event page which plugs something special at 10pm but I suggest you simply wander and see where the night takes you. Maybe there will be ice cream….
