City Sonic: Woodhands at the Don Valley Brick Works

September 14, 2009

Director: Rob Pilichowski, 2009
If you wanted to see electro-pop duo Woodhands play with Kids on TV and Holy Fuck on October 25, 2006 you had to follow these instructions: “1. Go to Sherbourne subway station. 2. In a newspaper box there will be maps that will show you how to walk from Sherbourne station to the Don Valley Brick Works! 3. The walk will be along a path bordered by bright orange tape. 4. Once you get there, it’s pay what you can + you should also bring your own booze.” Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt of Woodhands revisit the Brick Works reconstruction site and recount what happened next at Unknown Unknown, one of Toronto’s legendary illicit art and music parties. Beware: may contain traces of asbestos.

City Sonic: Geddy Lee (Rush) at Massey Hall

September 13, 2009

Director: Bruce McDonald, 2009

In June 1976, Rush ended their 2112 tour with three sold-out concerts at Massey Hall, an historic event at an historic venue. These shows were recorded for the double-live album All the World’s a Stage – an album that broke the band in the U.S., becoming their first Top 40 Billboard hit and paving the way for a string of famous Rush live albums. It was a first for Rush, but not the first time singer/bassist Geddy Lee felt magic on the stage at Massey. Geddy takes us on a tour inside the legendary concert hall and back to the 1970s to reminisce on how getting to watch Cream and Genesis rock Massey Hall as a star-struck teen set the stage for him to make rock music history there himself.

City Sonic: Care Failure (Die Mannequin) at 102.1 The Edge

August 21, 2009

Director: Bruce McDonald, 2009
As a troubled teen confined to her bedroom by strict parents, Care Failure found her only solace in 102.1 The Edge, Torontos alternative rock station that plays music as reckless as she is. After starting a band of her own, Die Mannequin, her first record played over those same airwaves. Shortly afterwards, the band was invited to perform at the stations annual summer showcase, Edgefest. Years later, having toured with the likes of Guns n Roses and with several records to her credit, Care pit stops by The Edge to talk with DJ Dave Bookman about what the spirit of radio means to her from her formative years through to today. Featuring raw, live performance footage of Care in The Edge storefront studios, and a special appearance by her Die Mannequin partner in crime Tony Bleed.

Artist Announcement: Die Mannequin at CFNY

August 17, 2009

Care Failure stands ready to rock inside the studio at 102.1 The Edge

Care Failure stands ready to rock inside the studio at 102.1 The Edge

Say what you will about the musical evolution of CFNY, a.k.a. 1012.1 The Edge, Toronto has been blessed to have an alternative to top 40 on the commercial dial since the late 1970s. (Limp Bizkit era excepted.) Pre-internet in particular, it was an essential way for young fans and musicians alike to hear new bands and new sounds. Care Failure of Die Mannequin is just one of them. We are pleased to announce that she took time out of finishing her band’s new record in L.A. to tell us about what the the Edge means to her — and not just because she’s our first girl. (We’ve got more ladies coming up in the series, just wait!)
