What a Fucked Up night. The Polaris Music Prize gala at the Masonic Temple last night capped off with a food fight between Montreal’s Malajube and Patrick Watson (well, more accurately, a booze fight) and Damian Abraham of Toronto hardcore heroes Fucked Up performing in his underpants. Oh, and then Damian’s band got an oversized $20,000 cheque and the honour of being this year’s Polaris winner for their album The Chemistry of Common Life. Congratulations to Damian and the F.Up crew.

We are celebrating by releasing a sneak preview of the City Sonic film “Damian Abraham at Rotate This.” Full details and photos to come here in the days ahead but mobile users get a first crack at it right now. Go to m.citysonic.tv on your mobile device of choice.

Tonight! Great Lake Swimmers and Fucked Up vie for Polaris Music Prize

September 21, 2009

The Polaris Music Prize gala is tonight at Toronto’s Masonic Temple. I will be there, with my Polaris Jury Wrangler hat on, celebrating each of the 10 Short Listed Albums, sequestered in the secret chamber as the 10 journalists from across the country vote on the winner. But here at City Sonic we’re most excited that two of our artists are in the running: congratulations and good luck to Great Lake Swimmers and Fucked Up.

Follow the Gala on-line tonight at 8pm– it’s streaming live at CBC Radio 3 and MuchMusic.com and broadcast on Sirius satellite radio, channel 86.

Three City Sonic Toronto Bands in the Polaris Prize Long List

July 6, 2009

Tomorrow morning, July 7, the Polaris Music Prize will announce the 10 Canadian albums shortlisted for this year’s $20,000 award. This is truly exciting news: and I don’t just say that because I’m part of the Polaris organization (as a Board member, which means I don’t get to vote but I do get to cheer.) It’s because when you look at the Long List of 40 albums released a few weeks back, there are three exceptional City Sonic artists in the running: D-sisive, Fucked Up and Great Lake Swimmers. And while I can’t say yet who will be on the Short List, or who I want to be on the Short List, or anything of the sort, I can wish these three very different but equally worthy candidates congratulations on their recognitions thus far. And then I can tell the rest of you to tune into CBC Radio 3 tomorrow for full coverage of the Short List announcement, live from the Drake Hotel.

More details at the Polaris site.
