R.I.P. 2009!

December 27, 2009

As the last year of this decade winds to a close, the team behind City Sonic would like to thank you for being part of our inaugural year. Producing and premiering the 20 films about Toronto’s music history is just a beginning, and we are already looking forward to 2010. Stay tuned for more development hoopla surrounding our mobile phone application, which will allow you to experience City Sonic on the streets. We’ll be partnering with exciting music events and offering more contest opportunities too.

It’s been a particularly interesting year to be documenting the venues where our local music scene lives: several notable music spots have made big announcements. Shortly after shooting there with Cancer Bats earlier in 2009, the Adrift Clubhouse shut its doors. Last month, it was reported that the Cameron House is up for sale, followed by news that the Big Bop (aka Reverb/Kathedral) is closing at the end of January 2010. But ch-ch-ch-changes can be for the better: Maple Leaf Gardens is set to re-open after a decade of dormancy, as a supermarket-Ryerson rink hybrid. And new hot spots are blooming all the time — witness the Garrisson, addition to the Dundas/Ossington hipster prefecture and new home for the Wavelength series. That’s where you’ll find us hanging out in February when they celebrate Wavelength’s 10th Anniversary. See you next year!

Haydain Neale of Jacksoul R.I.P.

November 24, 2009

Sad news tonight for the Toronto music community. Haydain Neale, lead singer of Jacksoul, has died from lung cancer at the age of 39. According to a statement released by his family, The Juno-award winning singer passed away Sunday, November 22 after a seventh-month long, private battle with the disease — this after recovering from a car accident in 2007 that put him in a coma. For many of us, the last we heard from Neale was that he was in rehabilitation and working on a new Jacksoul record, due out next week. This news of his death comes as a shock and early reports are vague on details but you can read more about Neale’s life and the new record in the coverage from The National Post. Messages of condolences can be sent to: haydainnealefamily@gmail.com

Cameron House up for Sale

November 23, 2009

Got $3 million to spare? The Globe and Mail has reported that the Cameron House has been put up for sale. The hotel/bar at the corner of Queen and Cameron has been a landmark of the Queen West scene for decades — as we trumpeted in our film with Justin Rutledge and Bazil Donovan of Blue Rodeo. As its owners say in the article, here’s hoping a patron of the (albeit cheap and whiskey-soaked) arts steps up to purchase the place and keep the live music flowing… Meanwhile, a reminder to visit — particularly for Kevin Quain and the Mad Bastards Sunday night residencies — while you still can.
